How to Maintain a Healthy Lawn
Water Efficiently
We’re willing to bet that as a Fort Collins resident, you pay attention to the resources you consume. You take advantage of the city’s off-peak hours to do dishes and laundry, and you take advantage of our amazing bike-friendly infrastructure.
When it comes to lawn care, one of the best ways to conserve water is to water early in the day to minimize evaporation. Most lawns need at least 1 inch of water every week, but you don’t necessarily have to pay for all of it. Use a rain gauge to track how much rainfall there is each week, and try to make up the difference as the week goes on.
Raise Your Blade
While short grass can give your landscape the appearance of a nicely manicured golf course, allowing your grass to grow just a bit taller is actually better for your entire yard. Taller grass provides the soil with shade and retains more water than short grass, and it also tends to grow deeper roots. No matter how you decide to let your grass grow this summer, make that you’re mowing regularly to prevent yourself from cutting too much at once and causing damage.
Use Fertilizer Sparingly
If July rolls around and your lawn isn’t looking as green as it did last year, don’t panic! The ideal time to fertilize is actually right now — approximately 30 days before the first day of summer. Dumping extra fertilizer on your lawn in the heat of the summer will actually cause more damage and make it look worse, so if you miss your opportunity now, wait to fertilize until fall when temperatures begin to drop.
Keep Weeds Under Control
If your lawn is filled with pesky weeds that just won’t seem to go away, now is the time to apply a weedkiller. Just as fertilizer applied in the middle of the summer can harm your grass, so too can many of the herbicides you’ll find in local home improvement stores. Do your best to pull weeds out by the roots while the weather is still relatively cool. If you don’t have time to do it yourself, just call our landscaping company for help!
